Surfing

Surfing Day 1: 28th March 2011-
Today we went out half the day surfing. It was a lot of fun. Max and Luke were great instructors and helped me get up lots of time. We went to Berry Bay. The surf from above did not look to great as the waves were a bit flat. I was hoping it was just the angle I was looking at the water. My wetsuit I had was a size too small for me because I picked up the wrong one after we dried them from snorkelling. I managed to get it on and zip it up though. When we climbed down the huge set of stairs, carrying our boards we finally went for a quick dip and then started to stretch and warm up. Luke and Max then did a quick demo of how to get up on the board and the dangers in the sea then we finally got to go in. It was a bit cold at the start but then the wet suit kicked in and it warmed up rapidly. I struggled a bit at the start to get up on my board but by the end of the lesson I was catching nearly every wave I tried. Once I was tired of surfing everyone went for a quick body surf which was great fun. We had fantastic weather while we were down there and the waves got fairly big by the end of the lesson. Everyone did pretty well during the surf and I think everybody got up at least once which was a good accomplishment.
Day 2: 29th March 2011-
Today we did our full day of surfing. It was a lot of fun but really tiring by the end of the day. We arrived at a beach called Daly’s Head. We were a half hour late because one of the water holders flooded the bus and there was a detour from a car crash so it set us behind a bit. We carried our boards down, stretched and then got straight in. We had a strong rip so we had to put in so much extra effort to not float away. Throughout the day we had several tournaments which made us really try hard to catch waves. It was pretty tiring though but it was great fun competing with each other. We had great weather today and the waves were perfect. I think today was better because we had heaps more time and got so much more surfing in. The stairs down up from the beach it was even more big than yesterday. This was probably one of my least favourite things of the day, along with the rip. My favourite part would definitely be when Olly, George, Monzy and I were racing and we kept getting dunked and jumping on each other’s boards.

Day 3: 3rd April 2011-
Today we went out on our last surf for the trip. We went back to Berry Bay (the first place we went to) and it was great fun. We had really go weather and the waves were nice a big. I felt my skills improved a lot today as I was standing up a lot more than the previous days and I was trying to catch bigger and harder waves. I was standing up before they broke as well which I thought was an achievement. Throughout the day we only had one competition. It was like the 1st one on our second day where we had to take turns running out and catching two waves, then coming back in, except this time we had to catch 4 waves (2 with a white board and 2 with a red board). It was great fun and a nice break from the casual surfing we were doing down there. We had lunch halfway through the day and for most of the rest of the time we were out there catching waves. After, Moff took a group photo of our Wardli just after we had gotten out.
